Wales & West Utilities (WWU), launched in June 2005, own and maintain more than 35,000 kilometres of gas pipes, and use this extensive network to transport gas to around 2.5 million households and businesses, serving a population of 7.5 million people, throughout Wales and the Southwest of England.
WWU identified a need to enhance the excavator loading and unloading process, particularly to eliminate the need for manual handling of the hydraulic breaker to/from their plant trailers and preferably the buckets, too.
WWU wanted to work with a safety-driven supplier to develop an engineered safe loading/unloading solution for the machine attachments at the lowest possible unladen trailer weight. The specification was a tall order, as there was no digger plant trailer on the market that met the specification at the time.
Towmate Trailers expressed interest in the tender project and went through the approval process. The application included a specification and design that we thought would suit the tender requirements.
Towmate was then approached to look at some concept ideas, based on the spec and description we had included in our application. We visited WWU July 2019 to show them the concept ideas, and from there, we proceeded to develop the concept and produced a prototype plant trailer.
Some of the features on the initial prototype didn’t really function in the environment in which WWU worked, so the prototype was modified several times until we got the trailer to a level that met WWU’s requirements. The final prototype was tested for 6 months with a WWU gang and in October, we received an order for 75 units, which were delivered in Feb 2021.
The solution was a digger plant trailer that had safety at its core and had a secure bucket and breaker store which allowed for kerbside unloading and loading and also ensured that no extra bed space of the trailer was taken up with these attachments.
