Pivot axles on a trailer allow each axle to move independently of each other and also the chassis. This enables the wheels to roll over kerbs, speed humps and potholes rather than into them.
Pivot axles provide axle articulation which enables all four wheels to stay in contact with the road surface at all times. Axle articulation allows the trailer to connect to varying tow hitch heights on the towing vehicle, with the wheels staying in contact with the ground.
