1. Coupling & hitch – inspect the towing hitch for any wear on the ball hitch or eye, and the drawtube for wear. Check the breakaway cable for any damage or corrosion.  Also check the bellows or gaiter to make sure there are no tears.
2. Chassis & frame – check for any cracking, rust or structural weaknesses on the chassis or trailer frame. Galvanised steel helps to prevent corrosion, but regular checks are essential.
3. Tyres – check your tyre pressure and tread depth regularly. Make sure to inspect the tyres for damage before every journey.
4. Brakes & bearings – Make sure you handbrake engages with the brakes correctly. A good tip is to make sure when you lift the handbrake that the grip us point to 10 o’clock position (or 2 o’clock from the offside).  If it raises higher than this you need to get your brakes adjusted.  This should be done approximately every three months but that does depend on frequence of use with your trailer. You also should inspect your brakes including pads, drums and bearings for any wear and tear. It’s important to make sure your bearings are running smoothly.
5. Lighting – it’s important to check your lights daily. Make sure all your main lights are working every time before towing. Also important to check for any visual damage such as cracks or a dirty lens.
6. Regular lubrication & cleaning – by keeping your trailer clean, you reduce risk of rust and damage from debris picked up from towing. Regularly lubricating moving parts on your trailer increases the efficiency and life span of the parts and prevents additional wear and tear. Typically you main lubrication would be done every 3 months, and doing so, this will prevent uneven and unnecessary wear.
