In a world where rising operational pressures and compliance scrutiny are ever present, balancing efficiency with safety has never been more critical. In particular, for the towing and trailers industry where the consequences of oversight can be severe, and even fatal, not only for those operating the trailers but for other road users as well.

At Towmate Trailers, we believe that ensuring we tow safely, efficiently, and legally is a shared responsibility. Our mission is to empower fleet managers and operators with the knowledge and products to help them uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance and protect not only their teams but also all other road users, whether that be pedestrians, cyclists, or other drivers.

Safe Loading & Load Distribution

There are many aspects to trailer safety, the most overlooked of which is proper loading. Poor load distribution can lead to accidents, increased wear and tear and costly downtime for maintenance and repairs. Fleet managers must ensure that all operators understand the fundamentals of:

  1. Weight distribution: ensuring that the load is even across the trailer and is spread correctly across the trailer’s axles.
  2. Load security: ensuring the use of proper load restraints to avoid and prevent shifting or detaching loads
  3. Trailer weights: ensuring that neither the nose load or the GVW (gross vehicle weight) are exceeded of the trailer you are towing and vehicle that you are towing with.

Load distribution is another subject within itself, you can find more about the wider subject on loading on our blog post here.

Maintenance: A Legal Requirement

Regular maintenance of your trailer is not just essential for ensuring longevity, safety and reliability, it’s a legal requirement. Brakes, lights, tyres and couplings should be inspected regularly to ensure that everything is in working order and to prevent costly repairs and potential accidents on the road.

At Towmate Trailers, we recommend a three-monthly, six-monthly, and twelve-monthly service to keep your trailer maintained to a high standard. As part of this, we’ve worked hard to manufacture our trailers in a modular, bolt together design that helps to ensure your downtime is minimized, make repairs easier and more cost-effective for you.

Our Commitment to Innovation

Towmate is proud to lead the industry with cutting-edge safety innovations designed to simplify compliance and enhance operational safety.

  • LaySafe: A revolutionary safety device that removes stored energy from coiled pipes during unloading. This dramatically reduces the risk of injury when distributing pipes from coil pipe trailers into trenches, making the process safer for ground crews and the general public alike. At present, safety measures like the LaySafe device are not legal, however at Towmate Trailers, we are working hard to educate businesses in the public utilities industry that this needs to be considered more seriously and be mandated in the industry to ensure operators working on sites are kept safer and at less risk of incidents.
  • LoadSentry: A game-changer for those transporting diggers from yards to sites. LoadSentry ensures that your diggers are loaded in the correct position every time, optimizing load distribution and eliminating the need for ratchet straps. This not only speeds up the loading process but also guarantees consistent, secure transport and reduces your axle and tyre wear, therefore decreasing your downtime for repairs.
  • Pivot Axle System: Our pivot axle system is an industry-first solution to ensure that the axles of your trailer are never overloaded. This prevents damage to both the axles and the wheels and tyres, reducing repair costs and keeping the trailers on the road for longer.

A Safer Road for Everyone

For those managing fleet procurement, risk mitigation is no longer just a legal or ethical imperative: it’s a commercial one. Preventable injuries and non-compliance can result in litigation, project delays or reputable damage, all of which impact bottom-line performance. Investing in certified systems like LaySafe®, LoadSentry and EUSR training enables fleets to take back control of their risk profile – improving both workforce safety and operational confidence.

Our commitment at Towmate Trailers goes wider than just our immediate clients. Every innovation we develop is designed with the broader community in mind. By helping fleet managers tow safely and legally, we’re contributing to safer roads for everyone, whether they’re operating the equipment or crossing the street.

As the industry adapts and changes, so must our approach to safety and compliance. With Towmate Trailers, you’re not just investing in equipment—you’re investing in confidence and peace of mind.
